On Reading Parmenides' Poem

Οὕτω τοι κατὰ δόξαν ἔφυ τάδε καί νυν ἔασι
καὶ μετέπειτ΄ ἀπὸ τοῦδε πελευτήσουσι τραφέντα·
τοῖς δ΄ ὄνομ΄ ἄνθρωποι κατέθεντ΄ ἐπίσημον ἑκάστῳ.

That of which I speak,
Is that of which I cannot speak.
The other is He,
But even He cannot be.
The Nature of self is such
As to be opposed by much
Of that which is other –
Other and not another.

Being is one.
All else is none.
The way of truth and reliance
Is opposed and other than appearance.
The way of opinion and seems
Is practice reduced to means.
Nothing is left,
Which is of Being bereft.

Beware the non-being.
Avoid that which is mere seeming.
Reject the many
Which begs if there be any.
Accept the lot
That there may be naught,
Besides the whole there is none.
Behold, Being is One.
